Air Freight Shipments
Back to References
Airfreight is charged based on a dollar rate per kilogram. Chargeable weight is determined in two ways. One way is by actual weight; the other is calculated from volume. The freight forwarder will charge you whichever method yields the greatest weight. |
Actual weight is just that. If your cargo is weighed using the English system you will need to convert it into kilograms.
Volume weight , also called dimensional weight, is calculated by taking the dimensions of the carton, finding its volume in cubic meters and then multiplying the cubic meters by 166. The result will be dimensional kilograms. If your cargo is measured in the English system you will need to use conversion factors to change it into cubic meters.
Important conversion factors to remember: 2,20461bs = 1 kilogram 1,728 cubic inches (l2 x l2 x l2) = 1 cubic foot 35 cubic feet = 1 cubic meter 1 cubic meter = 166 dimensional kilograms
Example: A crate weighs 386 lbs and measures 45" x 43" x 50” (ll4cm x ll0cm x l27cm)
To find Actual kilograms convert the pounds to kilograms by dividing the pounds by 2.2046. 386 lbs divided by 2.2046 = 175 actual kilograms To find Dimensional kilograms from the crate's English measurements follow these steps: Multiply 45" x 43" x50" = 96,750 cubic inches Divide 96,750 by 1,728 = 55.9 cubic feet Divide 55.9 by 35 = 1.59 cubic meters Multiply 1.59 x 166 = 263.94 dimensioned kilograms If your measurements are already in metric you will only have to do the following steps: Change the centimeters to meters by moving the decimal point two places to the left. Multiply l.l4m x l.l0m x l.27m= 1.59 cubic meters Multiply 1.59 x 166 = 263.94 dimensional kilograms For this shipment you will be charged for 264 dimensional kilograms, as it is greater than 175 actual kilograms.
